LEI Code Registration

A Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is a 20-character global code that identifies a legal entity in financial transactions. RBI requires non-individual borrowers with total bank exposure of ₹5 crore or more to have one, and it's needed for large-value RTGS/NEFT and cross-border transactions. RITS & Associates applies for and renews LEIs for companies, LLPs, firms and trusts.

Why banks ask for it

Banks use the LEI to identify a borrower across the financial system and link its group entities. RBI phased the requirement in for borrowers by exposure size, ending with the ₹5–10 crore band in April 2025, so most mid-sized corporate borrowers now need one. An LEI that isn't renewed lapses, which can hold up a loan renewal.

Documents required

  • Certificate of incorporation or registration.
  • PAN of the entity.
  • Details of the parent entity, if any.
  • Authorisation letter for the applicant.
  • Constitutional documents — MOA/AOA, LLP agreement or deed.

The process

  1. Collect entity details

Legal name, registration number and addresses exactly as registered.

  2. Parent details

Direct and ultimate parents, where applicable.

  3. Apply and pay

With the issuer, with supporting documents.

  4. LEI issued

After validation, the LEI is published in the global database.

  5. Renew annually

We diarise renewal before the expiry date.

What the LEI record contains

  • The entity's legal name and registration number.
  • Registered and headquarters addresses.
  • Legal form and status.
  • Direct and ultimate parent entities, where they exist and consolidate the entity.
  • Registration and renewal dates.

LEI records are public and searchable in the global LEI database maintained by GLEIF, so banks and counterparties can check them.

Practical notes from our engagements

  • LEI allowed to lapse. Banks check status at renewal. Renew before it lapses.
  • Parent relationships left out. The system asks for parent entities; incomplete data can delay issue.

How we handle LEI registration

We apply with complete entity and parent data, and renew each year before expiry.
